Poetry by Pen Y Bryn Pupils

These poems are written by the talented  pupils from Ysgol Pen Y Bryn taking inspiration from some of the early photographs of Longfields Association and Cerebral Palsy Midlands. They were written during our workshop day at Pen Y Bryn School, Sara Beer from Disability Arts Cymru and film maker Ben Ewart-Dean led the event and  we looked at the photographs and saw a short clip of some old film footage. The pupils reflected on the material and wondered about: why the pupils did not have a uniform but the staff did how uncomfortable the calipers were that some of the children were wearing what

A collaborative workshop!

As part of the Legacy of Longfields project research has uncovered old photographs.  During our workshop day at Pen Y Bryn School, Sara Beer from Disability Arts Cymru and film maker Ben Ewart-Dean led the event and  we looked at the photographs and saw a short clip of some old film footage. The pupils reflected on the material and came up with creative responses in the form of poems, drawings and drama.  The responses will be edited by Ben into a single film and will be exhibited, alongside some of the created work, at the end-of-project exhibition in May 2018. We started

Question time at Pen Y Bryn

Pen Y Bryn pupils have been very busy learning about the history of Longfields Association and during October I took part in a question and answer session at the school.  The pupils of today wondered what pupils in 1953 did when they started at the school established by ‘Longfields parents’. There was a wide range of questions, some of which are reproduced here.  There were lots more! What did they do for entertainment? What lessons did they have? Did they play football/any sport in school? What did they have for dinner? Was there a library in school? Did they go on

Pen Y Bryn School visits West Glamorgan Archives

It was a busy morning for Pen Y Bryn pupils on a recent visit to West Glamorgan Archives.  These archives hold the ‘Longfields collection’ so there was a lot to research and discover about the association. Outside the weather was dismal, raining hard with a gusty wind coming in from the sea, but inside the archives a warm welcome was waiting for everyone from Katie and Anne-Marie!   Pupils learned how the archives hold important documents, photographs and other items to preserve them and share them as people researched their past.  They discovered how documents are protected when in storage and

Pen Y Bryn School visits Swansea University

This month a group of budding historians from Pen Y Bryn came to Swansea University to visit the Richard Burton Archives and the Egypt Centre.  Their visit began with half of the pupils visiting the archives and while the others worked in the library researching the history of Longfields Association. Katrina and Sue from Richard Burton Archives made us all feel very welcome and their enthusiasm was mirrored by the pupils!  Richard Burton’s ‘book bag’ was the cause of much debate.   How many books could fit in there?  Would the bag be too big to take on a plane as hand luggage
